We are looking for a Materials Scientist/FA Engineer to head a small group providing a Technical Service to the Company, across the full Lifecycle of Products focused chiefly on Materials Science and Defect Investigation, across Engineering disciplines. What You’ll Do As a Principal Materials Scientist
- Provide a value added Defect Investigation Service to the Company in a timely manner, taking into account customer requirements.
- The day-to-day running of a technical service group including lab facilities. Included in this are responsibilities for H&S, RPS, Capital, and Maintenance.
- Supervision of others within the group, supporting their development in the field of Defect Investigation and Materials Science.
- Providing Materials Science support to the engineering community.
- Outsourcing investigative work, as dictated by workload and technical limitations, to external suppliers where appropriate.
- Prioritising work, in line with business needs to ensure best value of resources.
- Working across engineering disciplines providing support in mechanical, electronic and optical activities.
- Mentor, coach and teach other engineers and scientists.
- Advance the expertise in the field of Materials Science especially in the field of adhesives and surface preparation.
- Lead the technical direction and provide the oversight needed for the team to achieve novel approaches to Defect Investigation.
- A degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline or have equivalent work experience.
- Be able to self-manage, self-motivate and look to continuously develop.
- Have the ability to develop lab. skills such as in micro-section preparation, optical and electron microscopy
- Be able to communicate effectively across different disciplines both verbally and in written form.
- Be willing to work on your own or as part of a team to resolve technical issues.
- Have experience in Defect Investigation and have a methodical and thorough approach to this discipline.
- Be able to advise on Materials Science issues to the wider Leonardo community.
- Well rounded experience in all phases of the Product Life Cycle across several projects and preferably in a number of engineering domains
- Experience of customer/ supplier relations and working within multi-discipline project teams.
- Experience with techniques, such as;
- Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis
- Optical Microscopy
- Micro-section preparation
- Vacuum processes e.g. for determining outgassing properties of materials
- X-ray imaging and other NDT methods such as PFD.
