Position Summary
Ensure timely and efficient completion of laboratory evaluations and engineering projects to achieve company, customer, and product reliability objectives, including cost initiatives. Support Design, Manufacturing and Quality Engineering functions. Provide team and individual responsibilities for leading technical projects or phases of projects involving the design, manufacture, validation and certification of flight critical aerospace systems, sub-systems and detail components including processes of manufacture and process surveillance. Responsibilities in identification of technical scope, cost accountability and schedule management. Accountability in meeting team performance to project objectives. Serve as a technical advisor on major projects. This position will be in the Materials and Processes Engineering Laboratory.

Responsibilities
Job Functions:
1.Ability to perform metallographic and chemical laboratory analysis for standard test methods as well as unique engineering evaluations.
2.Ability to run a failure analysis and investigations using standard tools and instruments including stereomicroscope, metallographic examination, scanning electron microscopy and spectroscopy.
3.Ability to document findings in formal report format including root cause and recommended corrective actions.
4.Ability to clearly articulate, communicate and present to internal and external customers, and coworkers.
5.Ability to organize data and run multiple investigations in parallel while reporting status to internal and external customers.
6.Ability to travel to various processing suppliers to perform audits or process reviews. Support implementation of corrective actions as necessary. Example processes include heat treating, electroplating, anodizing, plasma spraying, welding, and inspection.
7.Maintains frequent formal and informal customer interface to present project status; determines feasibility of changing customer requirements and may propose and/or negotiate changes in schedules or methodology in coordination with program management. Gains customer confidence in overall support of customer programs.
8.Prepares and/or reviews technical project work (e.g., engineering drawings, process standards, standard operating procedures, manufacturing cell layouts, test plans, and reports) by applying engineering principles and technical judgment. Advises and monitors regulatory and intellectual property concerns.
9.Ensures consistent engineering standards, processes, and documentation methods are used in project deliverables. Establishes and maintains engineering history files, project files, and related information to provide archive of technical project activities.
10.Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publications, benchmarking best practices, and/or participating in professional associations.
11.Acts as point of contact on technical and project-related matters. Identifies mentoring and development needs; serves as a mentor for other employees. May serve as a functional specialist.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a science technical discipline. A metallurgical engineering degree, materials science engineering degree, or mechanical or aerospace engineering degree with a minor in materials science is most suitable for this position
Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through academic projects, general work experience or 0-3 years of related experience.
· Basic knowledge in the following categories of materials science, engineering and manufacturing including:
Process control and monitoring of manufacturing processes including thermal treatments of metals, foundry control (casting and forging), welding, brazing, soldering, electroplating, coatings, shot peening, non-destructive testing, and materials testing.
Additive Manufacturing Technologies.
Familiarity with all types of industry and government-controlled specifications.
Metallographic preparations and microstructural analysis.
Metallurgical failure analysis including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS.
Failure analysis.
Chemical analysis of processing solutions and oils.
Corrosion protection methods including various surface coatings, platings, and inhibitors.
Design and evaluation of galling and wear resistant material/coating combinations.
Materials selection for numerous environments and applications.
· Ability to effectively communicate and present status, actions, recommendations, and other technical information with clarity and precision. Ability to respond to significant inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or marketing/sales teams.
· Effective project management and organizational skills. Able to facilitate project team interactions and develop project team member capabilities.
· Ability to apply and integrate knowledge of other related engineering areas or experts to own area of expertise.
· Proficient with software and specialized data analysis, design, and project management tools following established project/program management protocol.
· Ability to establish and track performance to goals and objectives to complete complex or major projects and provide direction to the team at project milestones.
· Proficient with standard project management tools and practices.
