Overview of role:
WestJet is seeking a Senior Manager of Data Engineering reporting into the Director of Data & Business Intelligence, to l ead and develop a team of data experts from DBAs, DevOps analysts, Data Engineers and Data Integration developers ranging in experience, in addition to vendor relationships for all areas of DataOps and Engineering. The leader will be instrumental in building and driving long term roadmaps for enterprise data, overseeing the management and direction of data projects across the enterprise, align data priorities with the data strategy, manage business unit budget and vendor relationships. The Senior Manager of Data Engineering will steward steering committees and work with business departments to mature the use of data to create a data-driven culture.
This individual exhibits a high standard of excellence, enjoys challenges, and is results-driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to work in an agile environment.
Key deliverables include:
- Lead and coach a high performing team. Manage performance and development plans by setting team objectives that align to data strategies
- Plan and manage demand from business, projects and operational requirements
- Manage relationship with vendors and managed service providers
- Engage with leadership and diversified customer groups to understand the needs and recommend business intelligence solutions
- Ensure all work complies with department standards on application development processes, quality and architecture
- Participate in the selection of hardware, storage, and software products
- Design, implement, and support platforms that provide business teams ad-hoc access to large datasets (eg data visualization tools for business users)
- Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, dashboards, etc. to drive key business decisions
- Participate in strategic & tactical planning discussions
- Standardize data consumption and usage across all customer groups
- Manage multiple cross-functional projects and conduct regular project reviews within an agile framework
- Manages and provides technical and business direction affecting capacity planning, new applications, data security, data quality and general technical environments
Experience & qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, economics, or another quantitative field
- 5+ years of experience in management of multiple and diverse teams
- 5+ years of large IT project delivery for data-oriented projects
- 5+ years of working with very large data warehousing environment
- 5+ years of demonstrated quantitative and qualitative data science/business intelligence experience with significant business impact
- 5+ years of relevant work experience in a role requiring application of analytic skills to integrate data into operational/business planning or advanced degree
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, goal orientated, and relationship building skills
- Advanced ability to draw insights from data and clearly communicate them to the stakeholders and senior management
- Be self-driven and show ability to deliver on ambiguous projects with incomplete data
- Strong verbal/written communication & data presentation skills, including an ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams
- Experience developing and executing strategic and technical roadmaps
- Ability to understand complex airline data
- Knowledge of Data Vault and Business Vault concepts and technologies
- Experience working in very large data warehouse environments
- Experience with transactional/operational data stores and data-as-a service architectures
- Experience with governance, controls, process and procedures, centers of competency and change management
- Experience in designing and delivering cross functional data solutions
- Experience with managing Vendor relationships
- Experience reviewing and negotiating contracts
- Experienced working in a fast-paced, high-tech environment and comfortable navigating conflicting priorities and ambiguous problems
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Team player – works to ensure team goals are met or exceeded
- Proven ability to meet tight deadlines, multi-task, and prioritize workload
- A work ethic based on a strong desire to exceed expectations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with different types of databases ie: Distributed, NoSQL, Relational etc.
- Experience with a variety of databases ie: SQL, PostgreSQL, AzureSQL, Oracle, CosmoDB, Casandra
- Knowledge of R, Python, Weka, SAS, Matlab or other statistical/machine learning software
- Knowledge of enterprise class BI tools ie: Snowflake
- Knowledge of data modeling applications – ie: WhereScape
- Knowledge of Cloud Technologies ie: Azure, AWS
- Strong grasp of quantitative data analysis and statistics
- Knowledge of information access and delivery methods, analytics applications and tools, data sourcing and integration methods such as OLAP / ROLAP / HOLAP and an understanding of data warehousing/mining, ETL, EII, data cleansing, and architecture
- Experience transforming data environments by implementing automation, AI and ML
