WestJet is seeking a Senior Safety Business Partner reporting into our Safety, Health & Environment team. You demonstrate a high standard of excellence, enjoy challenges, and are results driven. You must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to work in an agile environment.
As the Business Partner, you will develop, maintain and support safety programs and initiatives in accordance with WestJet’s corporate safety policies. Programs are tailored to each business unit's individual requirements and will support the continuous improvement of safety related activities. You will encourage the participation in the corporate safety management systems and the ongoing development of WestJet’s safety culture. As the Senior Partner, you will also be assigned a business unit portfolio(s) and provide dedicated support with respect to the bespoke safety programs, safety subject matter expertise in the development of local standards and procedures, and any change management related initiatives. As a Senior Safety Business Partner, you'll provide guidance and support on WestJet safety and procedural compliance in addition to any legislation as may be set by local, Provincial and/or Federal regulations.
This specific role will support WestJet’s Cargo business with focused safety and quality support. The role will focus, in collaboration with Cargo leadership and service partners, on establishing and supporting safety and quality control programs for dangerous goods, warehouse operations, ground operations, and cargo freighter operations.
Key deliverables include:
- Actively support, direct and facilitate business units in meeting their safety requirements as stipulated in WestJet’s corporate safety policies, Corporate and/or Regulatory program documentation and operating manuals and procedures. This will be achieved by developing bespoke safety programs that are tailored to individual business units and utilizing appropriate tools (e.g. self-audit compliance programs, promotion of safety awareness through scheduled safety meetings, issuing of safety alerts / bulletins, etc.)
- Provide guidance and oversight to senior leaders to ensure effective change management coordination and execution which may require onsite support in domestic or international locations. Coordinates/perform operational safety risk assessments and project safety plans including onsite pre-assessments (e.g. cargo operation start-up or restart)
- Using the company safety database and other data sources, responsible for compiling and delivering regular and ad hoc safety performance reporting for the related business unit. Identify, highlight and assist with the development of corrective action plans for trending safety issues to mitigate the risk associated with these non-compliances
- Provide safety subject matter expertise in the development of local standards and procedures - continuously improving the process of hazard identification, risk assessment, and compliance with the implementation of risk mitigation measures in accordance with WestJet’s corporate safety policies
- Contribute to the reduction of personal injuries and aircraft damage in accordance with company targets
- Provide guidance, training and support to responsible business unit leaders on root cause analysis techniques (e.g 5 WHY’s). Assist responsible leadership in the development of Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) to address findings resulting from audits, investigations and/or incidents reporting through the company reporting system. Support responsible leadership in validating effectiveness of CAPs
- Support audit preparation, coordination and presentation activities to ensure that all are satisfactorily addressed
Experience and qualifications:
- Formal Safety Certification preferred
- 3-6 years operational experience including Dangerous Goods, Ground Operations, and Cargo Operations. Experience with Cargo Freighter Operations is an asset
- Experience in safety management or related field, with previous experience in Safety Management Systems preferred
- Working knowledge of International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards and recommended practices for Ground Handling, Dangerous Goods, and Cargo Operations
- Experience and understanding of the commercial issues in aviation
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing including program development and presentation skills
- Ability to plan and implement safety programs
- Proficient with MS Suite
- Must be able to obtain Transport Canada Security Clearance
- Ability to travel regularly for periods of time, occasionally at short notice, both domestically and internationally
