A Truly Global BusinessÂ
Every day, around the world, we help aircraft fly further, faster and greener. Â Weâre the worldâs leading tier one aerospace supplier of systems and components. With over 15,000 employees across 41 manufacturing sites in 13 countries serving over 90% of the worldâs aircraft and engine manufacturers with sales of ÂŁ2.8bn. Together as âOne GKNâ weâre moving our business and industry forward developing technologies that rapidly decarbonise aircraft, and innovating to help build a new generation of planes that produce zero emissions. Â Weâre putting sustainability at the heart of what we do; driving our objective to becoming a net zero greenhouse gas emissions business before 2050!Â
Making a DifferenceÂ
Itâs great to know youâre making a difference to the future of aviation! Whatever part you play youâll be helping us deliver operational excellence to our customers.
Â
The Opportunity
Based at our state-of-the-art Research & Development facility - the GKN Aerospace UK Global Technology Centre - in Bristol, we are seeking a new Senior Research Engineer (Fuel Systems) to lead the analysis of hydrogen fuel systems for aircraft applications. This will include thermo-fluid gas dynamics analysis to support the development of Aircraft Hydrogen Fuel system from liquid storage through to gas in conditions suitable for use in fuel cells.  You will perform analyses, reporting findings in a clear and concise manner. You will work alongside other members of the team to peer review technical deliverables; you will scope out deliverables for academic partners, internal resources and subcontractors and manage them to ensure delivery on time, to the correct cost and quality.  You will also support the work of the business to establish design rules and safety standards for the application and use of hydrogen.
How You'll Contribute
In this brand new role, you will:
- Build capability for thermo-fluid & gas dynamics simulation of multi-phase flows of cryogenic fluids transport, storage & use in aircraft fuel systems.
- Perform analyses of Hydrogen and other cryogenic systems for system sizing and safety and certification activities; develop methods to validate analysis to ensure accuracy of analyses.
- Develop processes and best practices for model /tools configuration control, verification & validation.
- Develop modelling plans and manage associated verification activities.
- Manage stakeholders to support modelling and simulation needs as and where they arise.Â
- Manage technical relationships with suppliers, industrial and academic partnersÂ
- Anticipate and manage transversal technical and business issues, arbitrate between solutions considering all aspects: sustainability, reusability, optimization, opportunity, schedule, quality, cost, risks, safety and performance.
- Engage with industrial forums /standards bodies for continuous development of GKN capabilities.
- Develop/Manage development of tools to model liquid hydrogen phase change in components/ storage tanks during cryogenic chill down and fuel sloshing as well as tools for sizing baffles/propellant management devices and modelling tank pressurisation, purging and drainage. Â Â
- Supervise modelling of hydrogen plume dispersion and combustion/explosion studies for development of hydrogen fuelled aircraft operating standards.Â
