- To provide Manufacturing Engineering support to the Operations teams within the part of the MAIT operation that builds propulsion systems for spacecraft.
- Supporting the Manufacturing Engineering team deliverables for the production of fully integrated Satellite Telecoms and ENS Products.
- This involves working in a high tech & high spec clean room environment – with elements of precision bonding & bolted assembly plus thermal installations and welding of pipework
PHASE 1:Will be to support the project to implement the digitalisation of the production process document workflow using Delmia as the primary system – so the confidence to learn and use various software systems will be needed.PHASE 2 – ONGOIING:Will then to be using that digitalised system operationally as a background to the tasks outlined in the Job Profile belowReporting To: AIT Manufacturing Engineering ManagerInternal Relationships: AIT Engineering Teams (M-AIT) - AIT Operations team Leader(s) - AIT Operations (M-AIT) - AIT Production Control - AIT Quality Team - AIT KPOs - AIT Delivery Manager - AIT R&D / R&T Team - AIT Improvements Team - AIT Industrial EngineersExternal Relationships: Cross Site AIT Engineering Teams - Engineering Support to Manufacture (ESM) - Design Teams - Responsible Engineers -Procurement TeamsJob Profile:- Provide Manufacturing Engineering support to Operations including working with technicians, Inspectors, team leaders and KPO’s as and when needed
- Support the generation of standard instructions in line with scheduled needs.
- Produce re-work instructions / deviation plans within the digital manufacturing system. Input screen grabs from the 3D design models for visual clarification.
- Identify parts and tooling required for the processes.
- Support quality reviews and Root Cause Analysis using lean tools, including driving and owning PPS’s.
- Support Lessons Learned exercises at key milestones involving all key stakeholders in phase (Operations, Process Owners, AIT Management, and Design)
- Ensure that feedback is provided from the cleanroom and to the Process Owners so that the current processes can be updated to improve them / remove non-quality
- Support to R&D / R&T for process developments and new process implementation, undertake process improvement and maintenance and monitor process implementation in operations
- Support training module creation, maintenance & Delivery. (Support to process owner / Operations).
- Ensure where possible that ME process and procedures are standardised, optimised, current and usable by work with Process Owners to identify future improvements.
- Design of day to day operational tooling / manufacturing aids for manufacture execution
- Support the use of MGSE and Tooling and ensure feedback is provided to the MGSE team for issues and improvements.
- Review documentation and conduct safety reviews to support critical handling activities.
Skills/Experience Required:Essential:- Appreciation of Aerospace manufacturing and assembly techniques e.g. Light weight mechanical fastening and bonding techniques
- Use of jigs and fixtures to aid assemblies
- A strong working knowledge of digital manufacturing systems for the digital creation of work instructions and manufacturing bill of materials.
- Ability to manipulate and capture images from 3D models
- Use of MRP systems
- Understanding of build documentation to ensure clear instructions are given to shop floor operators.
- Driving build quality through review of processes and implementation of improvements
- Time served engineering apprenticeship or equivalent qualifications
- Good understanding and detailed experience of mechanical engineering and systems, including but not limited to -
- Lean manufacturing techniques including 5S, root cause analysis and continuous improvement (Green belt)
- Production planning.
- Support to operations.
- Manufacturing / Test processes for the space industry.
- Mechanical handling equipment.

- A background in an aerospace engineering environment, preferably within the space sector
- High level technical skills and relevant experience.
- Procedures and process control.
- Able to work offsite (UK and abroad) for undefined periods at short notice.
- Work overtime and occasional shifts, as and when required.
- Able to support out of normal hours work using the “on call” rota process, as and when required.
- Team working and team leading skills.
- Practical and proactive.
- Process and Quality driven approach with high attention to detail.
- High self-motivation and ability to deal with changing priorities on a multi project basis.
- Good planning skills and process competence.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Previous experience of aerospace structures and build requirements is a distinct advantage.
- Good time management.
Desirable:- A knowledge of Tig welding on small bore pipe work - often 6mm in diameter
- A good understanding of spacecraft manufacture and build philosophies
- Clean room experience
- Mechanical & Electrical design / manufacturing / validation / experience
- A knowledge of spacecraft propulsion assembly processes
- Harness and wiring techniques & testing
- Knowledge of Health and Safety principles and their application to the specific environment
Education & Training:Essential:- Minimum of HNC level in a Mechanical discipline.
- A lesser qualification is acceptable if a high level of similar industry experience can be demonstrated.
