The Manager Freighter Operations will report to the Senior Manager, Cargo Operations and is responsible for station readiness for the entire WestJet Cargo freighter operation. This manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the freighter stations, ensuring they are resourced correctly with qualified support as well as the overall coordination of activities on the ramp to safely deliver and improve the customer experience, while achieving operational and financial objectives. The Manager Freighter Operations is responsible for third party contract management for the ramp handling of freighters, cargo running of outstations, and ULD management.
The key objectives of the role include:
- Responsible for the supervision of all airside/ramp operational activities by service providers, and ensuring the safe and secure freighter handling in all stations
- Responsible to provide hands-on guidance, ramp operational expertise & leadership to the team regarding the loading of special cargo on freighter and widebody aircraft
- Ensures implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and controls to fulfill procedural/regulatory requirements for freighter handling
- Accountable for the development of SLA and metrics that can be used to measure performance of cargo delivery by the warehouse and ramp teams
- Accountable for conducting/supporting investigations on all safety related incidents or accidents
- Accountable for ULD management for all outstations and collaborating closely with 3rd party vendor(s)
- Responsible to provide leadership and guidance, set clear expectations and hold service providers accountable on the performance of freighter operations
- Responsible for implementing the strategic direction of the cargo operations, and delivering new products like Quick Ramp Transfer
- Accountable for developing and maintaining strong working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders as it pertains to standard operating procedures, day of operational challenges, performance service failures, irregular operations, etc.
- Responsible for the feasibility study of stations for freighter operations based on commercial input(s)
- Responsible to drive efficiencies that lead to increased customer satisfaction and/or reduced cost using LEAN principles
- Provide leadership and guidance, for the warehouse on the building of heavy cargo according to the established industry standards, in a safe and secure way
Experience and qualifications:
- 5+ years of relevant work experience with previous work in airline operation
- Must be knowledgeable of applicable cargo handling and Transport Canada regulations
- Thorough knowledge of ramp operations and freighter handling operations
- Knowledge of weight and balance, and qualified dispatcher for freighters is an asset
- Knowledge of warehouse operations to build HEA cargo is an asset
- Ability to build and influence relationships
- Experience in working with non-unionized and unionized third party providers
- Must be detailed and driven with the ability to process information quickly while understanding the overriding goals
- Excellent presentation skills with the ability to communicate information that tells a story, highlights key insights, and influences business decisions
- Proven success in independently meeting tight deadlines in a fast paced and continuously evolving work environment
- Experience in enhancing operational efficiency and safety
