Position Summary The NORAM Regional Engineering Director role encompasses the following responsibilities (as outlined in 87210749-GOV-GRP-EN Engineering Governance): Build the community of Engineering Managers and Heads of Discipline within the country for best practices sharing, peer reviews, etc.; Manage a Country Competence Centre, gathering transverse engineering coaches (e.g., agile coaches) and mutualized disciplines (e.g., software engineering) across country business units (CBUS)/Domains in order to reach critical size, as agreed to with the affected Global Business Units in the region; Ensure country specific regulations on engineering (e.g. trade compliance) are properly managed by the various Engineering competence centers/business lines within the region; Interface with IS/IT for engineering tools deployment, including potential synergies across domains; Provide career opportunities for engineers across business line/domain boundaries and; Represent Thales in the region towards universities and engineering societies. Essential Functions / Key Areas of Responsibility Leads an NORAM regional steering committee (ARSC) consisting of the key BL engineering leaders across the Americas. Build the community of Thales Experts and Specialists within the country encouraging the best practices and use of these expertise within the country. Works with the ARSC to define opportunities for synergy and cost reduction across business line boundaries and develops/leads implementation of operational approaches to exploit them. Responsible to understand and lead deployment of key Group engineering initiatives into the Americas. Partners with the trade compliance and quality organizations to understand key regional regulations for engineering and works with the ARSC and IS/IT to ensure that adequate systems, processes and training are in place to meet them. Partners with IS/IT and Thales Corporate engineering to identify tooling needs for engineers in the Americas region and ensures that the tools, support systems and training are to meet these needs. Oversees, in partnership with IS/IT and the ARSC, the security and effectiveness of business managed networks (BMNs) used within the region. Partners with the HR university relations team (1) to define the network of key universities for engineering recruiting and technology development efforts and (2) works with the ARSC to develop effective operating relationships with these universities. Acts as technical advisor to the Americas leadership teams (NORAM and LATAM). Participates in the Thales Experts selection board. To perform these essential functions, the Americas regional engineering leader: Must be able to lead through influence and experience across business line boundaries in a matrix organization structure. Must have experience in engineering line management in one or more key disciplines. Must develop effective working relationships with a complex set of engineering leaders within the business lines and at the Thales Group level. Must have a strong technical background in the aerospace domain, especially space and airborne systems. Minimum Requirements: Skills, Experience, Education, Technical/Specialized Knowledge, Certifications, Language Skills and Abilities: At least 15 years of experience in one or more engineering disciplines, including at least 3 years of first line supervision. At least 3 years of experience in engineering leadership at a supervisory level above the first line. At least 5 years of experience in the aerospace domain. Fluent in English. Located in North, South or Central America. Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Preferred Qualifications Skills and Abilities: 3 years of experience leading a large (>100 people) engineering organization or discipline. Work experience in the areas of aircraft avionics, in-flight entertainment systems, radar, electro-optical and/or space systems. In-depth knowledge from working in one or more of the key Americas business lines. Knowledge of the engineering tooling environment in Thales Group. Experience working with or overseeing one or more business managed networks. Working relationship with one or more universities in the region. Fluent in Spanish and/or French. Education: Master’s degree or PhD in relevant engineering discipline. Physical Demands No significant physical demands Special Position Requirements Schedule: Core work hours will be 8-12 am, 1-5 pm local time of the selected individual. ~10% of the time hours will be shifted to accommodate overlap with personnel working in France time (e.g., a PDT location might require a 5 am start), including periodic meetings held in the middle of the night (typically no more than one time per month). Travel: Estimated that this position will require travel within the Americas region for approximately 3-4 days per month and travel to France 3-4 times per year for up to one week each time (including some weekend travel which will be compensated with time off). Financial Impact This position will affect the productivity of approximately 1500 engineers across the Americas region, including identifying opportunities to reduce cost as well as improve program efficiency through cross-business line synergies. All business line engineering leaders in the Americas, Thales Corporate Engineering Team, Thales Group IS/IT, including the Engineering Value Tower, The Americas IS/IT team, and The Thales Digital Factory, both within the Americas and in France.
