Position Summary This is a Hybrid position based in Ottawa, ON. Thales has been the number one vendor in the HSM (Hardware Security Module) market for years and is currently seeking a Principal Software Development Engineer to join the team in Ottawa, CA to work on projects developing software solutions for embedded systems applications for state-of-the-art, high performance, cryptographic security products. A successful candidate must have a strong development background in C and C++ and demonstrated workplace experience in Linux-based embedded systems. Key Areas of Responsibility This individual will work within a team of product development staff, and interact with other functional groups at Thales. The Principal Software Development Engineer on our team will have the following responsibilities; Architect, design, code, test, debug, and document the Linux-based embedded HSM software and the host-side software, which interfaces with the embedded HSM software. Be exposed to many areas of Linux-based embedded designs from boot-loaders to high-level applications to crypto algorithms to device drivers to low-level hardware interfaces to test tools. Work on new features and products. Integrate with the third party software, as needed, maintain the existing code base. Participate in requirements analysis, architecture/design discussions, planning sessions and effort estimates. Review code of other team member’s work as necessary. Heavily invest in documenting and testing your designs including test automation. Assist customer support and other groups as necessary. Mentor and guide more junior team members. Work in a very dynamic environment and will interact other teams. Minimum Requirements Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience with embedded systems development using Linux. Strong development background in C/C++. Strong understanding of multi-threading, inter process communication, networking and hardware interfaces. Experience with Multi-platform software development - including Windows and Linux. Experience with kernel modules and device drivers. Familiarity with hardware interfaces such as Power PC, ARM, DMA, PCI, USB, Ethernet, etc. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and responsibility in a team environment and to take ownership of a task and see it through to resolution. Superior problem solving and software debugging skills. Ability to analyze requirements and develop architectural, functional, and design specifications with minimal direction. Ability to quickly adapt to varying requirements and situations, quick learner, analytical, methodical, diligent, thorough, and a self-motivated team player. Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications Software security experience with knowledge of Cryptography, PKI. Experience with PKCS#11-application development and with cryptographic providers and API’s (Microsoft/JAVA). Knowledge of FIPS and Common Criteria certifications. Experience with static code analysis using tools like Coverity, HP Fortify etc. Experience with source control tools like GIT, GITLAB. TCP/IP networking, REST, gRPC, micro-services.
