Hybrid Work:

This position is eligible for hybrid work, within Calgary AB from the WestJet campus 2-3 days / week.

The Senior Specialist, Process & Lean is a passionate Lean practitioner responsible for driving organizational efficiency with teams across the organization including frontline, back office, and senior leadership. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Process & Lean, they will coach these groups to solve problems in the time and place they occur, focusing on streamlining processes to make them candidates for digitization and automation. This position will require the successful candidate to immerse themselves in significant facilitation events, coaching and teaching Lean thinking & problem solving to demonstrate how a Lean mindset can drive positive business outcomes. By integrating Lean principles with digital initiatives, they enable the organization to achieve cost savings, improve efficiency, increase productivity, and foster innovation.

Key deliverables include:

  • Lead, plan, and facilitate Kaizen events with Global Leadership Team (GLT)/Department Leaders to solve complex problems with interdepartmental cross-functionality - Formalized problem solving executed through multi-day Kaizen events. Emphasis on larger initiatives with potential for automation to drive more than $1M in cost reduction per event and/or 50% in efficiency & productivity improvement.
  • Champion and teach disciplined root cause problem solving at all levels in the organization and assist in creating a Lean Centre of Excellence in the company. Mobilize a Lean company culture through showcasing the value of Lean skillsets & mindsets so that each business unit begins to develop this within their own teams.
  • Coach and teach Lean practices to the organization through war room design and operation, command center, obeyas, kaizens, etc. Drive a bias for action using visual management and disciplined root cause problem solving.
  • Create visual displays of data to help others understand complicated concepts more easily.
  • Assist the development of Lean tools and templates for use in various Lean initiative workshops. Support simulation-based training events to certify Lean Problem Solvers and Kaizen Facilitators; schedule and coordinate training events, prepare and organize training materials, assist with event facilitation.
  • Create the foundations, requirements, and MVP (Minimum Viable Product) for processes that can be automated and digitized by the Digital Delivery team.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Lean / Six Sigma Black Belt or other advanced Lean certification is strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant hands-on experience leading & supporting continuous improvement opportunities in a complex environment.Strong knowledge & hands on experience with Lean concepts, practices & methodologies such as Kaizen, VSM, Value-Added Analysis, Visual Management, 5S, A3 Thinking, Standard Work, Error-Proofing, TPM, Kanban, Single Piece Flow and Quick Changeover (SMED) etc.
  • Experience facilitating Kaizen events and can show demonstrated success from these events.
  • Experience facilitating Lean training using simulations and hands on real-world examples.
  • Exceptional facilitation skills with specific focus on coaching stakeholders of various levels on problem solving using Lean thinking.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to positively influence the behavior and performance of peers and leaders, and positively impact the decision-making of senior management.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and changing environment, working collaboratively across all levels of the organization.
  • Previous airline or aerospace industry experience is an asset, especially within an operational context.
  • Ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong conflict management, change management and ability to resolve project & people issues at multiple levels across the organization.
  • Ability to connect with team members and stakeholders to build strong relationships and establish trust.
  • A solutions-oriented practitioner, who fosters a culture of creativity, innovation, common sense, and proactivity.
  • Highly collaborative and team-oriented approach.
