The Manager of Crew Planning is responsible for managing a team of analysis and planners in the development and implementation of short and long–term pilot and flight attendant manpower plans. The Manager will play an important role in delivering an operationally effective and financially efficient crew manning budget to Flight Ops and Inflight.
The Manager of Crew Planning position will perform various functions that include complex planning of crew member staffing needs and planning of short-term crew staffing and allocation plans to comply with government and company regulations while maintaining the operations in an efficient, cost effective, and safe manner.
This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring operational excellence while providing customer service to all crew members. This position leads to forecasting crew productivity, reserve demand, and overall staffing requirements to ensure that the airline is appropriately staffed, and the operation is supported.
This role reviews long-term crew headcount needs and liaisons with other departments such as Crew Scheduling, Flight Crew Operations, Network planning and Talent.
Here’s what you’ll do
- Lead the Crew Planning Team
- Be responsible for the oversight and accountability of the crew planning function
- Optimize the crew rosters to ensure highest crew productivity while adhering to safety and compliance requirements
- Oversee crew resources to ensure program coverage and operational resilience
- Lead process and system improvement
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations including duty and flight time l imitations, fatigue risk management and more
- Administer the monthly crew Preferential Bid System (PBS) process and publish rosters
- Manage responses for bid resolution and report on bidding results
- Monitor and track testing in Bidding and Scheduling System(s) as needed.
- Report on reserve utilization, net reserve coverage and crew productivity metrics; strategize with OCC and Crew Scheduling on operational needs
- Assist in evaluating, selecting, implementing, integrating, and maintaining related legacy and third-party crew planning and tracking systems
- Monitor department performance and identify possible weaknesses in order to propose and, when applicable, implement corrective actions to maintain optimum performance
- Document, analyze, and report existing processes, procedures, and methods related to Crew Planning to ensure effective business and systems operation, as well as resource utilization
- Ensure that the necessary levels of communication and knowledge-sharing exist within the relevant Operations departments within his remit to maximize efficiency.
- Make business and operational decisions to minimize disruptions in the schedule and their impact on the customer and the Company
- Organize and supervise Crew planning process in order to optimize Crew members usage, within the legal and Company requirements.
- Work with Finance and Accounting on budgeting, forecasting, and educating of crew-related topics.
Here’s what you need to be successful
Minimum Qualifications
- 4-Year College Degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the aviation industry
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Aircraft or Crew Scheduling or Dispatching experience or equivalent experience in a similar role
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a leadership role
- Proficiency conducting complex, multi-variable data analyses
- Extensive experience in crew planning, roster development, or related roles, preferably in a complex operational environment
- Analytical mindset with the ability to collect and interpret data, forecast labor demands, and identify trends and opportunities for improvement
- ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively
- Proven knowledge and complete understanding of the applicable FARs.
- Willing to travel as needed
- Ability to work outside regular office hours as required
Preferred Qualifications
- System Integration and implementation Experience
- Previous experience with Collective Bargaining Agreements and labor unions
- Knowledge of the NavBlue suite
- Python, SQL, R-Studio or related coding capabilities
