As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for the creation of component/assembly/systems designs and associated through life justification that meet their requirements and product attributes, ie life, cost availability and safety margins. You will create solutions and justifications that are robust against variation, taking account the full life cycle (concept to disposal). You will also exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and have an understanding of and ability to integrate cross-discipline engineering concepts which include manufacturing engineering, service engineering, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, Stress analysis both static and dynamic, fracture and fatigue assessment, mechanical technology, cost engineering, product definition.
The team covers the nuclear plant and associated support equipment, such as, but not limited to, production tooling, assembly/dissembly equipment and in service maintenance equipment. They apply commodity standards and appropriate methods, tools and techniques such as - System Engineering Robust Design, Automated Component Design Systems, Cost Modelling, Standard Features and Knowledge Management.

What you’ll be doing:
You will understand Product system / sub-system requirements and derive Component requirements at task level. You will also be responsible :
- To produce robust design solutions which are insensitive to variation to address specified requirements.
To collaborate and communicate design solution information with task stakeholders. - To search for, capture, store, and re-use knowledge relating to design activity.
- To understand and apply the commodity standards and to create new standards where none exist.
- To liaise with manufacturing and service engineering to actively integrate the experience and knowledge from these areas.
- To check own and others design a solutions and technical for completeness and correctness.
- To manage work in accordance with project cost, timescale, and quality targets.
- To resolve problems through evaluative judgements. Analyses factual information from multiple sources, interprets results and identifies effective solutions by applying their own technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.
- To participate in Design support activities during production, build, maintenance and decommissioning of components.
- To analysis, interpretation and presentation of test results including comparison with analytical and/or empirical models.

- Bachelor's degree, Master's or PhD in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
- Technical experience relevant to the engineering discipline.
- An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems.
- Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and justification.
- Membership of a relevant professional body or working towards.
- Experience as design engineer operating across the product life cycle, undertaking design safety justification activites supporting manufacturing, integration, maaintenance /refit activities and dealing with operational issues.
- Experience of Research and development, analytical and test verification activities.

To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.
Due to the nature of work the Business conducts and the protection of certain assets a person has to be a UK national or in MoD approved cases a Dual National from a non ITAR country.
