Responsibilities

Primary Purpose of Job

Under the direction of either the Chief Metallurgical Engineer/LAIP Quality Lead or the Chief Quality Engineer/SAIP Quality Lead, this position is responsible for providing technical support for metallurgical product and process controls to assure the realization of Howmet business objectives. This position does not directly supervise other personnel. The incumbent communicates with all levels of management within the Operations, Supply Chain & Logistics, and Commercial Departments, as well as with other Quality and Metallurgical personnel. Externally, they communicate with customers and suppliers.

Accountability Objectives

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing test release and supplier certification results, regarding product and disposition, to ensure the achievement of production goals.
  • Providing technical expertise to the metallographic analysis of the material and processes of Howmet Forged Products.
  • Determining the acceptability of micro features of metallographic samples from production forgings.
  • Communicating new part qualifications and necessary technical requirements, from a heat treat or testing standpoint, to Production teams before approving the release of a respective product. Preparing documentation for customer qualification approval to ensure on-time delivery. Maintaining and updating manufacturing and technology instruction manuals, as necessary.
  • Converting, translating, and communicating specified customer requirements to the Test Lab and Production staff, such as test quantity and numerical value to assure that all requirements are met. Evaluating test results in comparison to customer requirements.
  • Implementing continuous improvement and stability activities for critical processes.
  • Developing and maintaining QA programs, specifications, procedures, and equipment to meet customer specifications and Howmet quality requirements.
  • Interfacing with customer representatives on Howmet product and metallurgical quality issues.
  • Interfacing with outside suppliers to monitor changes in stated requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Assisting the Chief Metallurgist in material and process development programs. Interfacing with the Howmet Technical Center and various outside universities.
  • Working in conjunction with, as well as guiding and supporting Production teams to meet on-time delivery requirements and schedules.
  • Supporting continuous customer and industry audits, in addition to all quality system certifications.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

For this position to be successful, the incumbent should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering from an accredited institution, or a minimum 8 years of metallurgical manufacturing experience in aluminum, titanium, steel, and nickel-base wrought products.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Preferred Qualifications

For this position to be successful, preference is given to candidates with:

  • The ability to effectively communicate (verbally and written) and delegate while maintaining forward motion on key deliverables.
  • A high degree of interpersonal skills to motivate and influence others, including those not under their direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability of problem solving, systems thinking, project management, and team building.
  • The ability to work in a fast-pace, multiple deadline-oriented work environment.
  • Expertise in titanium processing and development, as well as the processing-properties-microstructure relationships of titanium and/or aluminum.
  • Experience with Oracle.

Working Conditions

This position involves moderate exposure to risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is normally performed in an interior work environment. While not exposed to hazardous materials, this position requires wearing full PPE to protect from mobile equipment and hot materials when on the shop floor.

This position requires light physical activity, such as walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time, as well as some lifting.

This position also requires a willingness to be responsive outside of normal working hours for support and travel domestically, as requested.
