Job Description

Leonardo Helicopters are looking for a talented Engineer to join the UK team based at the Yeovil site in the South West of England.

Reporting to the Chief of Engine Installation Systems, you will be responsible for ensuring the achievement of the Powerplant (Airframe Systems Design and Development Dept.) objectives of designing, developing and certifying Engine Installation Systems on Leonardo Helicopters.

The role will provide technical support on all powerplant related queries that are received from in-service customers, ensuring that aircraft availability / serviceability is maintained at the highest levels.

The Propulsion Engineer accountabilities will include, but not be limited to

  • Overseeing the design, development and in-service support of all components included within the Engine Installation Systems i.e. engine cowlings, engine mountings, engine bay firewalls, engine air intakes and exhausts, engine oil cooling systems, engine manual control systems, fire detection and suppression systems, engine air particle separator systems, engine inlet barrier filter systems, engine air start systems, infra-red suppressors, engine and engine bay drainage systems;
  • Definition and management of interface requirements both into and out of the Engine Installation Systems department;
  • Ensure that the integration of the engine and associated control system onto the helicopter is optimized and in accordance with the engine specification and installation manual;
  • Ensure that the engine parameters and any associated data provided to the on-board instrumentation are consistent with the requirements defined by the engine supplier, and contribute to the definition of the most effective ways of presenting the data in order to optimize the man / machine interface;
  • Produce test documentation (e.g. test procedures, test reports, test authorisations) to cover the testing of components under the responsibility of the Engine Installation Systems department to a standard to achieve component certification/qualification.
  • Produce flight test procedures and reports in order to verify correct engine behaviour when installed (i.e. installation losses, vibration, handling, cooling margins, performance, etc.) on LH products;
  • Provide specialist engineering support to contribute to the definition of rotorcraft flight manuals and aircraft maintenance manuals;
  • Management of external suppliers / vendor technical activities;
  • Ensure the use and development of new technologies;
  • Demonstrate fulfilment of regulations and be able to discuss them with Authority (Civil and Military};
  • Management of internal tasks including the preparation of plans and deliverables to ensure that tasks placed upon the Engine Installation Systems department are discharged on time and to budget.
  • Liaising with Customers to ensure that the solutions provided by Engine Installation Systems are optimised to meet customer needs whilst still fulfilling certification and LH needs.
  • Provide specialist support to rig and aircraft testing when required. This can include testing at off-site, state of the art test facilities.
  • Provide specialist Engineering support to other Engineering departments and other Company Directorates, including Operations, Customer Support, Programmes and Procurement.
  • The Engine Installation Systems department assists in the resolution of engine related in-service problems in collaboration with Airworthiness Authorities, Product Support, Customer Support and Customers.
  • Provide support to Systems Engineers to manage project planning, preparation of bids, estimates, budgets and other supporting documentation.
  • The Engine Installation Systems team also represent LH on national panels and committees which generate airworthiness regulations, design information and test procedures/guidelines.

Essential Knowledge, Skills And Experience As a Propulsion Engineer

  • The successful candidate should be educated to Degree level in Mechanical or Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, either as a recent graduate or with several years of relevant experience. Alternative qualification may be considered.
  • Familiar / previous experience working with Powerplant systems (e.g. Engines, Auxiliary Power Units, Fuel Systems, Pneumatic/Air Start Systems is desirable but not essential as the successful candidate will be provided with opportunity to develop within the role.
  • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools, particularly Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Ability to plan own tasks and co-ordinate with other functions while working as part of a cross functional team.
  • Fluent in the English language
  • Flexible mind set to cope with changing priorities, multi-tasking activities and the ability to work to tight deadlines. Good problem solving skills with a systemic approach and ability to make sound technical decisions.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional team environments and the confidence to present to external customers / all levels of LH personnel.
  • Travelling for short periods (at short notice) may be required on an occasional basis, both inside/outside of the UK. Applicant must hold a valid passport

Desirable Skills And Experience As a Propulsion Engineer

  • Knowledge of UK MoD Helicopters and UK MoD working practices preferable.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with DOORS
  • Familiarity with requirements of System Engineering (V&V process) including the management of requirements based Engineering. Experience of working with, and developing data/reports that demonstrate compliance to certification requirements (FAR/CS 27, FAR/CS 29, Def Stan 00-970)
