Job Summary

GKN is actively engaged in a series of major, multi £M development programmes with the long term aim of enabling zero emission flight on a series of new aircraft programmes. We want to enable the complete electrification of Aircraft powered by Liquid Hydrogen, Fuel cells and Cryogenically cooled networks and motors. As such we’ve already built up a significant capability with an international team of over 70 specialist Engineers working on Liquid Hydrogen based propulsion systems, including storage (tanks), Fuel management, Fuel cells, Electrical networks, Motors and Inverters, with Cryogenics being an enabling technology. This ground breaking technology is maturing rapidly and we’re searching for specialist Engineers and Scientists who want to work with us in this rapidly changing, dynamic, multifunctional environment to help us push further and faster as we win more programmes and the market accelerates.

We are seeking to recruit a modelling and simulation engineer to conduct 1D analysis of hydrogen and hybrid electric power systems for aircraft applications. You will be part of a team of engineers responsible for the system architecture of power systems for sustainable aircraft working. The role will cover early preliminary design studies through to the detailed analysis alongside rig and flight test. Experience with Aerothermal systems, Hydrogen Systems, cryogenics, multiphase flow and Control systems is desirable.

How You'll Contribute

  • Build and maintain a 1D model of a Hydrogen Electric power system
  • Perform architectural studies using 1D modelling tools
  • Steady state performance predictions
  • Dynamic/Transient performance predictions
  • Work with sub-systems and suppliers to gather data required for model
  • Create documentation for models
  • Plan validation of models through design of tests
  • Validate models using test results

What you'll bring

Essential

To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

  • Degree qualified engineering physics or maths
  • Experience in using and building 1D models for designing systems and analysing systems
  • Experience in multi-domain 1D modelling and simulation software tools
  • Experience in 1D steady state and dynamic/transient modelling.
  • Experience performing trade studies
  • Experience in Thermodynamics / heat transfer / fluid mechanics leading to expertise in modelling and simulation of compressible & incompressible fluids / multi-physics thermal & fluid systems.
  • Experience in model validation through development & validation test planning and execution.

Desirable

  • Masters Degree or PhD in related multi-physics domain and minimum 10 years experience. Experience in modelling thermal systems
  • Experience with Simcenter AMESIM
  • Experience with Matlab, Simulink and Simscape
  • Experience in phase change modelling and fluid transport
  • Experience in simulation, design and development of cryogenic tanks, pipes and heat exchangers.
  • Experience and Domain knowledge of Hydrogen fuel systems, Fuel Cell Systems, cryogenic systems Battery electric systems, electrical power systems.
  • Experience in related aircraft certification compliance and planning
