Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Energy and Environment, the Associate Director, Environment will support the development of Energy and Environment’s short- and medium-term business strategy, influence forward-thinking management decisions, and build on the Airport Development & Technical Services’ overall success and ongoing environmental compliance for the GTAA. This role is accountable for leading and ensuring the environment teams deliver on key performance targets that are critical to the regulatory compliance, social license, safety and success of Toronto Pearson and our aviation partners to meet or surpass the expectations of our passengers and local community.

As Associate Director, Environment, you will:


  • Provide ongoing direction and support to environment team managers, staff and consultants for oversight of ongoing regulatory compliance, planning, tracking and reporting site spill response and site remediation as needed
  • Lead a comprehensive storm water management program which includes regular monitoring, sampling and reporting of air quality while making recommendations for improvement
  • Complete environmental assessments of all airport projects and Facility Alteration Permits (FAPs) of the project to recommend mitigation measures in order to reduce the environmental impact
  • Manage and continuously improve the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
  • Engage and expand partnerships with our employees, regulators, customers, suppliers, communities and other interested partners to educate on environmental initiatives, set standards, and assist with questions or complaints
  • Support transparency in external reporting and in dialogue with partners by leading and supporting reporting initiatives
  • Ensure cost-effectiveness of the delivery of safe, reliable and compliant environmental strategies
  • Develop and lead departmental budgets, critical service, supplier contracts, and a storm water facility renewal program in excess of $10 million
  • Support environmental approval processes and environmental risk management for multi-billion dollar airport infrastructure programs
  • Lead a collaboration with GTAA groups and third parties to ensure environmental leadership and compliance by supporting and delivering on the people manager promise to support and further the business’ vision through building and development of diverse, multi-skilled teams
  • Build a compelling agenda and a clear set of purposeful goals, objectives and expectations which people fully understand and are consistently held accountable to
  • Coach, mentor and develop individuals and teams to rise to their full potential while providing timely, constructive and consistent feedback and personal development opportunities


This is a chance to be on the frontline of history at Toronto Pearson. To do so, you will bring:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or equivalent
  • Professional Engineer or relevant environmental designations
  • ISO 14000 training and/or certified (is considered an asset)
  • 10 years of experience in environmental management in airport or similar industry
  • Experience developing and managing financial budgets and forecasts
  • Experience working with government or regulatory agencies and with management in a unionized environment
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Transport Canada Clearance

  • Knowledge in Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001 preferred)
  • Demonstrated understanding of operations in a large airport
  • Established professional network of airport industry or with similar stakeholders and customers
  • Knowledge of Federal environmental compliance and reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of best practices for managing environmental compliance for air, water and soil
  • Ability to analyze data to establish trends and root cause analysis using tools such as Excel (MS Office suite)
