Job Summary

Based at our state of the art £32m Global Technology Centre in Bristol we are currently seeking a Senior Analysis Engineer to support a number of projects for computational mechanics activities such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and materials qualification for the development of novel liquid hydrogen fuel storage and distribution systems for aerospace applications; to grow, integrate, implement, and verify technical solutions and compliance documentation compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements, within agreed program, schedule, and manufacturing constraints.

This role will see you will perform a range of simulations including but not limited to static, transient dynamic explicit, modal, harmonic, shock response, coupled multi-physics, transient and steady-state thermo-mechanics, safety assessment and deflagration/detonation analysis etc. including creating and processing concession stress justifications for in-production non-conformances, provide production support to develop repair solutions, analysing and implementing design modifications to improve manufacturability and quality to existing production processes.

Job Responsibilities

Sitting Within Our Civil Business Lines, This Opportunity Will See You Carrying Out Some Of The Following Tasks To Include; But Not Limited To

  • Support the qualification of materials and mechanical system components used in the development and manufacture of low temperature and/or cryogenic and/or hydrogen products such as tanks, pumps and distribution pipes for cost-effective design and/or design for manufacturing and performance
  • Lead analysis activities and deliver the documentations such as FEA/CFD model verification and validation (V&V) reports, stress reports, qualification and/or acceptance test plans and/or test reports, justification reports, and reserve factor summaries
  • Use of pre-processors such as Simcenter 3D, Abaqus/CAE, etc. to prepare design model/geometry and construct finite element and/or finite volume meshes/grids
  • Use of FEA and CFD codes such as Nastran, Abaqus, COMSOL, StarCCM+, etc. to solve structural, thermos-elastic and multi-physics problems
  • Perform model V&V activities such as mesh convergence studies, comparison to analytical calculations and experimental tests including correlation of experimental strains and mapping temperature measurements
  • Use of Python scripts for automating pre-/post-processing of FEA/CFD models and for developing analysis workflows efficiently for multi-scale modelling and co-simulation
  • Use of Linux-based high-performance computing (HPC) clusters to solve large finite element models for composite progressive failure prediction and/or metallic welding crack initiation under low temperature/mechanical cycling
  • Interpret and process design data including interfaces, dimensions, materials, parts, manufacturing process requirements, assemblies, and tolerances as part of the stress / thermal analysis of components
  • Consult with internal teams and customers to understand their modelling and simulation requirements and translate these into packages of analysis work and statement of work for suppliers
  • Conduct research and development of new and novel techniques in the field of engineering modelling and simulation including low cycle and/or high cycle fatigue and crack growth models
  • Support the continuous maintenance and review of Analysis Procedures and Simulation (including HPC) work instructions and/or user guides
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership of a multidisciplinary team in a matrix organisation and support intellectual property generation/protection and Technology Readiness Assessment Process
  • Mentor junior stress analysts and supervise members of the engineering team, lead reviews, and peer review technical deliverables and/or lead outreach initiatives with academics and industrial partners including definition of research scope, and supervision of research projects and PhDs

What We're Looking For

In order to be considered for this opportunity you will require the following:

Essential

  • Hold a degree in a STEM subject with significant content in computational mechanics, materials science, thermo-elastics and multi-physics.
  • Demonstrable relevant stress analysis experience, ideally with new products development, thermo-mechanical systems development and their installation/integration in an aircraft.
  • Experience in use of international standards (e.g. ASME BPVC, SAE), design practices, regulations (e.g. CS 25), certification requirements and means of compliance.
  • Experience with using CATIA to be able to interrogate design data and/or propose design modifications, systems integration and fuel distribution for aircraft propulsion
  • Knowledge of cryogenic, hydrogen systems and / or high vacuum systems and/or hydrogen pressure vessel and thermal insulation systems.

Desirable

  • General awareness of considerations throughout the product lifecycle i.e. material selection, design, manufacture, testing, repair, life cycle cost analysis and/or sustainability impact assessment
  • Member of a professional engineering institution with chartered status or working towards CEng registration
  • Held previously check or approval signature authority for technical reports, test plans/reports and drawings including design models/mock-ups
  • Autonomously perform technical investigations on new fuel system development within an uncertain R&D environment and/or functional test failure mode effects analysis
