Key Responsibilities

This leadership role provides strategic and operational oversight for a comprehensive, best-in-class Technical Operations strategy including financial risk mitigating strategies to achieve lower long term Tech Ops expense relative to industry peers and coordinates efficient sourcing for all of Tech Ops (Inclusive of Engines, components, and more).

This leader leads all aspects of a multi-billion dollar annual spend via global Tech Ops sourcing and procurement. Managing multi-modal logistics and inventory along the tech ops supply chain and ensuring balanced access to off-airport and on-airport infrastructure and services.

This people leader will hire, develop and retain a highly motivated team of professionals as well as develop excellent relationships with cross-functional partners to achieve United’s business objectives. The Managing Director is encouraged to represent United in industry forums and advise United in matters related to physical and financial markets, management of technical operation subsidiaries, and rules and regulations that impact expense and infrastructure.

  • Develop appropriate plans, business processes, metrics and landmarks for the various functional teams (e.g. Supply, Logistics, Trading, Risk, Finance) in line with dynamic objectives of the business balancing partner needs including cost, complexity and high service levels
  • Negotiate and implement agreements that enhance cost savings, improve service levels, mitigate contractual risks, optimize asset utilization, develop infrastructure to support United NEXT growth, and build/improve overall value for United.
  • Guide team strategies to focus on data driven analysis, thorough quantitative and qualitative decision frameworks and consider cross-functional impacts to various collaborators
  • Develop strong working relationships with suppliers, service providers, airports and relevant internal teams to drive sourcing strategies that lower cost and risk to United and the business. Represent United on key industry forums. Remain abreast of internal and external factors affecting strategic and tactical decisions and develop actionable insights and recommendations for senior leaders
  • Develop and implement self-supply strategies that build strategic and optionality value to United with cost efficient deployment of working capital and assets along the Tech Ops supply chain.
  • Develop a robust talent acquisition and management strategy to hire, develop, train, coach and retain a high-performance team that takes pride in continually improving, adopting change, learning and working together to produce high quality industry leading results
  • Provide high quality communication to senior management and Board of Directors for periodic and ad-hoc reporting on current operations, drivers of fuel expense and market changes, emerging risks and actionable mitigation plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Procurement/Supply-Chain, Finance or another business-related field
  • 10+ years of related experience inclusive of 7+ years experience in managing supply chain/sourcing activities, including strategy development, procurement, quality management, inventory management, and distribution
  • 5+ years management experience in progressively challenging sourcing roles
  • Comprehensive knowledge of procurement business process and strategies
  • Proven track record of building and leading successful teams
  • Significant experience in all aspects of sourcing/ procurement lifecycle
  • Clear understanding of market trends and opportunities, including new technologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in leading internal team members

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Business or Finance, CFA preferred
  • 7+ years directly in leading large Technical operations and/or aircraft parts portfolios on buy/sell side at major airline, large supplier
  • Demonstrated understanding of engines and aircraft components market prices and risk management
  • Expert understanding of engines and aircraft components
  • Sophisticated understanding of buy or sell-side of markets
  • Solid understanding of aviation field
