Senior Estimator

Job Description

Johnson Service Group, a nationally award-winning staffing firm, is looking to hire a Senior Estimator for a high growth engineering and electrical firm in San Diego.

Direct Hire | Onsite | $90 - $120K |Candidate must have authorization to work within the US as our client isn’t able to provide current or future sponsorship.

Responsibilities:
  • Estimate costs for wet or dry utilities projects, encompassing electric, communications, gas systems (both distribution and transmission), sewer water, and storm drain.
  • Conduct assessments for asphalt paving, concrete, and associated civil infrastructure.
  • Manage the estimation and bidding process for wet and dry utilities across residential, commercial, and public works projects.
  • Oversee projects from initial estimation to completion, ensuring precision and efficiency.
  • Bid on multimillion-dollar projects, maintaining competitive and feasible proposals.
  • Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and teams to ensure project objectives and timelines are achieved.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends to enhance estimation accuracy and methodologies.
Estimator Duties:
  • Prepare work for estimation by gathering plans, specifications, technical bid documents, and related materials.
  • Determine labor, material, and time requirements through thorough study of plans, specifications, and associated documents.
  • Solicit price quotes from vendors by preparing Request for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Input bid quantities into the HCSS Heavy Bid Estimating Program.
  • Compute costs for labor, material, and time requirements using the Heavy Bid Estimating Program.
  • Identify discrepancies and inconsistencies in bid documents, and address them through information collection and analysis.
  • Resolve discrepancies and inconsistencies by preparing Request for Information (RFI) and communicating with customers, contractors, and agencies.
  • Conduct site visits when necessary to assess bid sites and surrounding areas.
  • Assemble and present estimates, including numerical and descriptive information.
  • Prepare bid documents for customers, contractors, and agencies.
  • Include inclusions and exclusions in estimates, and negotiate final bid quantities and prices.
  • Review contracts and bid scopes for accuracy.
  • Analyze and summarize project information and trends.
  • Provide support to field operations during projects.
  • Estimate costs for change order conditions and quantify them.
  • Attend Pre-Construction, Trade Partner, and Post-Construction meetings as required.
  • Maintain a cost database by entering and backing up data.
  • Stay updated on technical knowledge through educational workshops and technical publications.
  • Contribute to team efforts by achieving related results as necessary.
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience in estimating wet or dry utilities, including electric, communications, gas systems, sewer water, and storm drain.
  • Knowledge of estimating asphalt paving, concrete, and civil infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to manage the full project lifecycle, from bidding to project completion.
  • Strong analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Organizational and project management capabilities.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration and report presentation.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with projects of various scales, from small residential to large commercial and public works.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard estimation software and tools.
  • Background in civil engineering or underground utilities experience.
