Graduate Thermal Engineer

HS Marston has an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Thermal Engineer to join our Engineering Department. The company is developing the next generation of high performance and unique innovative heat exchangers. Significant emphasis will be placed on simulation and as such HS Marston is looking for someone with a strong analytical / numerical background with software coding experience in MATLAB or Python and CFD flow analysis would be beneficial. You should have some industrial experience in a related field and a natural curiosity and eagerness to solve complex engineering problems related to flow and heat transfer enhancement.

Labour grade: TBC

Responsibilities:

  • Create heat exchanger concepts that meet requirements set out by the aircraft engine and airframe manufacturers
  • Use Star CCM+ CFD software to simulate 3D flow
  • Apply principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in calculations
  • Liaise with multiple departments to support heat exchanger production
  • Work with Test Engineers to perform validation measurements
  • Contribute to development of best practices
  • Create patents through R&D and strengthen links with internal and external organisations and Universities
  • Work closely with customers
  • Lead and manage technical engagements, meetings and collaborations

Requirements:

  • Education – Minimum Degree in Mechanical Engineering / Maths / Physics
  • Computer Literacy – Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Experience programming in MATLAB or Python essential, with experience in CFD flow and conjugate heat transfer modelling in Star CCM+ beneficial.
  • Other Skills – Strong analytical and numeracy skills, good communication (verbal/ written) with the ability to work independently as well as in a team. Knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics are essential. Experience using CAD packages such as Siemens NX and/or other commercial CAD tools would be beneficial.

This position will involve access to export-controlled information and hardware where an export license would be required for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Employment will be subject to satisfactory security checks, export license approval, and if required, completion of a non-disclosure agreement

Senior Thermal Engineer

HS Marston has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Thermal Engineer to join our Engineering Department. The company is developing the next generation of high performance and unique innovative heat exchangers. Significant emphasis will be placed on simulation and as such HS Marston is looking for someone with a background in MATLAB programming and CFD flow analysis. You should have industrial experience in a related field and be naturally curious and eager to solve complex engineering problems related to single and multi-phase flow and heat transfer enhancement.

Location: HS Marston Aerospace Ltd - Wolverhampton

Labour grade: TBC

Responsibilities:

  • Extend existing analytical methods to cover all heat exchanger configurations and manufacturing technologies
  • Develop and automate heat exchanger sizing tool using MATLAB
  • Use of Star CCM+ CFD to simulate flow/heat transfer and perform geometry optimisation to meet set objectives
  • Size heat exchangers by applying principles of heat transfer and fluid mechanics with working fluids such as air, oil, fuel, water and refrigerants
  • Perform validation tests working alongside Test Engineers
  • Create, maintain, and distribute technical material, including but not limited to, reports, best practice guidelines, design review documents, internal training, and journal/conference papers
  • Create patents through R&D and strengthen links with internal and external organisations and Universities
  • Lead and manage technical engagements and collaborations

Requirements:

  • Education – Minimum Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a numerate discipline (Maths/Physics, etc.)
  • Industry Experience – Aerospace/Automotive preferred but not compulsory
  • Computer Literacy – Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Experience programming in MATLAB, Excel VBA and CFD flow and conjugate heat transfer modelling in Star CCM+ are essential.
  • Other Skills – Strong analytical skills, good communication (verbal/ written) with the ability to work independently as well as in a team. Knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics are essential with experience in vapour cycle component analysis. Experience using nTopology and CAD packages such as Siemens NX and/or other commercial CAD tools would be beneficial.
