Job Description

CEO of Acubed and Head of Research & Technology NA

The merged role, titled "CEO of Acubed & Head of Research and Technology North America," encompasses leading Acubed, Airbus's Silicon Valley-based remote technology/innovation unit, while also overseeing the Research and Technology (R&T) strategy across the Americas. The individual in this position is charged with driving the unit towards groundbreaking innovations in AI, Cloud, and Big Data, leveraging the vibrant ecosystem of Silicon Valley. This role involves setting a dynamic vision, driving performance, fostering relationships with key stakeholders, and aligning the unit's direction with the broader Airbus vision.

Additionally, the role entails establishing a strategic R&T roadmap, securing funding opportunities, and capturing scientific innovations from the US research community, including academia, aerospace suppliers, and research organisations. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of Airbus's research program needs and priorities, as defined by the technical roadmaps, and will lead the effort to maintain and execute Airbus's R&T footprint strategy in the Americas. This includes leading a team to facilitate R&T partnerships in the Americas, ensuring coordination and visibility with Airbus Engineering Centers, and acting as the R&T focal point for local and regional Airbus functions, as well as all business units and subsidiaries in the region.

The role reports to the Acubed Board and CEO of Airbus Americas and has functional reporting to the Airbus R&T Programme and Disruptive R&T.

Primary Responsibilities

Connected to Acubed:

Develop and articulate a compelling vision for Acubed, aligning with Airbus's strategic goals.

Lead the unit through uncertain and ambiguous situations with high integrity and effective decision-making.

Continue building a hub of innovation in Silicon Valley, rapidly advancing entrepreneurial ideas and technologies.

Utilize data analysis to ensure Acubed's objectives are in harmony with Airbus's global strategy.

Drive operational and financial performance in a fiscally responsible manner.

Champion the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and represent the company as a thought leader in technology and innovation at industry events and forums.

Ensure adherence to corporate governance standards and practices, aligning the unit's strategy with the Board of Directors and shareholder interests.

Oversee the planning and implementation of long-term growth strategies and operational policies.

Connected To Head Of Research & Technology (Ho R&T)

Interact with the executive/senior members of the Americas R&T community, including academics, industrial, and government organizations.

Operate independently, making decisions within the objectives, framework, ways of working, and constraints defined by the corporate Chief Technology Officer and Head of R&T Contracting and Partnerships.

Independently identify/create opportunities and the means to successfully exploit said opportunities to realize agreed objectives.

Rationalize the dynamic, vast, and complex R&T landscape in the Americas, understanding and designing the limited resources and levers at their disposal to optimum effect.

Develop and maintain relationships with the Chief Technology Officer and Airbus technical community in Europe, respecting organizational and cultural differences across the Atlantic and the corporation.

Candidate Profile

Ideal Experience

  • 15+ years of relevant Research & Technology Leadership experience gained in industry or Silicon Valley, or a combination of the two.
  • Demonstrated ability working in a large, global, and matrixed environment is imperative.
  • Proven internal and external stakeholder management skills to include the ability to manage through influence.
  • Established relationships and credibility with key stakeholders, including in Silicon Valley.
  • Technical acumen; the successful candidate will bring credibility and knowledge of the scientific and operational issues associated with managing a major research enterprise. The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, and articulate scientific strategy at the highest levels.
  • Advanced degree in a field of relevance, preferred.
  • US citizenship or the ability to work in the US.
