The Manager, Climate Change Programs - Ground Operations leads climate-related projects and initiatives for Air Canada’s ground operations aligning with the company’s Climate Action Plan and decarbonization strategy. This role focuses on reducing GHG emissions from facilities, mobile equipment, and selected Scope 3 emissions sources. In addition, this role will also spearhead grassroots initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of sustainability within the organization in relation to energy savings. The manager will engage with various teams to drive behavioral changes to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions within the ground operations scope. This role will also be working in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to support the development of energy efficiency, electrification, low carbon energy sourcing, including on-site renewables, initiatives and ensure alignment with Air Canada’s Climate Action Plan and decarbonization long-term strategy.
Responsibilities:
- As a climate subject-matter expert, develop, implement and manage Air Canada’s ground operations GHG emissions management plan that will cover Air Canada’s facilities, ground mobile equipment and certain Scope 3 emissions sources, as well as actively support the development and deployment of energy-efficiency, electrification, fuel/energy switch and on-site renewables programs, projects and initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess and projects upcoming mandatory Scope 3 emissions requirements to meet compliance obligations.
- Support the management of the financial aspects of the climate change programs, including budgeting for projects and ensuring cost-effectiveness of low carbon/sustainable fuels/energy, energy efficiency measures and electrification.
- Provide recommendations to decision-makers regarding climate-related projects, programs and initiatives that will have a significant impact on the Air Canada’s ground operations GHG emissions, including of Scope 3 emissions.
- Assist internal departments and subsidiaries in the development of climate projects in relation with Air Canada’s ground operations, including a strong focus on behavioral changes.
- Collaborate with other Sustainability Programs team to ensure cohesion of environmental benefits, especially regarding Scope 3 emissions management.
- Provide subject matter expertise in the implementation of Air Canada’s Climate Change Action Plan in co-operation with internal stakeholders and the Climate Action Plan Program Manager.
- Provide subject matter expertise and inter-branch coordination in developing project plan, business cases, and identification of external funding sources and application.
- Participate and represents Environmental Affairs at various internal working groups and external events.
- Provide subject matter expertise in influencing the development of domestic and international environmental policies and standards related to climate change, and low carbon/sustainable fuels.
- Work in close collaboration with the other members of the Climate team and support their projects, programs or initiatives when needed.
- Monitor emerging technologies and best practices from around the world and conducts research analysis for policy development and shares this knowledge with internal stakeholders.
- Continually maintain a high level of professional proficiency and knowledge of all environmental matters, regulations, technologies, and developments.
- Shares good practices and problems/lessons learned with colleagues, departments, and alliance carriers.
Qualifications
- University degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences or equivalent.
- Minimum 6 years experience in related GHG management, environmental project management, aviation environmental management or pertinent aviation experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, sustainable and/or low-carbon fuels production.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of best building standards such as the Living Building Challenge, LEED, BREEAM, etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of renewable natural gas environmental attributes, RECs, PPAs and VPPAs purchases.
- Experience with grassroots initiatives and a proven track record of fostering engagement and behavioral changes in an organization.
- Ability to develop and implement strategies that promote sustainable practices at the grassroots level.
- Knowledge of current Provincial and Federal environmental legislations, regulations and policies related to GHG and air emissions, and related industry best practices an asset.
- Knowledge of GHG programs and standards (CDP, TCFD, GRI, EcoVadis, ISO14064-1/-2/-3, etc.), an asset.
- Highly developed facilitation and negotiation skills, including an ability to foster strong relationships with and manage internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven project management skills involving multiple departments with exceptional problem solving, analytical, organizational and communication skills.
- Strong ability to prioritize activities and excellent time management and organizational.
