A vacancy has arisen in the Operations Department for a Post Irradiation Examination Technician. This position involves the remote handling and examination of post irradiated nuclear fuel. The Submarines sector of Rolls-Royce has been providing power systems expertise to the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines since the early 1960’s. At the Vulcan site we have been leading the way by operating full-scale prototypes of the Royal Navy’s Nuclear submarine plants as the lead of class. As a site we have been involved in the trials, testing and data collection across all the reactor cores designed and developed for the Ministry of Defence.

What you’ll be doing:
To provide world-class technical support for in-service/delivered products and to influence maturity throughout the product life cycle to meet customer and business needs, ensuring Design Intent is met.
To ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective product attributes are defined and maintained by means of through life modelling of product reliability, deterioration mechanisms, costs and help implement robust & cost effective solutions.
- Management of known and potential safety issues (SAR & RT) and appropriate involvement in safety boards as defined in Safety Management Plan.
- Provide technical surveillance and quality assurance audits to support continuous product enhancement for customer satisfaction and business expectation.
- Develop and approve the technical content of technical publications/communications (used by OEM, build/commissioning/maintenance bases and customers) including acceptance limit development.
- Set reliability targets (such operational disruption metrics) based on historical data and monitor performance against targets.
- Predict future safety and reliability performance based on failure rates, adopting statistical techniques to support Numerial Risk Assessment, Parametric Distribution and fly forward analysis.
- Identify cost reduction opportunities by reviewing and maintaining life cycle engineering policies and any associated maintenance planning documentation.
- Manage any issues that effect the Maturity, Lifecycle Cost, Reliability and Maintainability and maintain Design Intent.
- Provide lifecycle technical data (build/in-service/decommisioning) and model/support modelling of through life performance, deterioration mechanisms and service attributes to create and maintain time on platform prediction, identify opportunities for optimization and support the generation of the Service Operation Validation Strategy.
- Prepare and deliver technical communications (e.g. presentation and/or reports) to platform provider, regulators, customers, internal stakeholder.
- Ensure compliance with requirements specified by regulatory authorities and to adhere to technical and business requirements of internal & external stakeholders. Where delegated, act as the Technical Authority providing assurance on build, commissioning and maintenance activities.
- Gather in-service data and carry out continuous improvement by identifying Best Practice and Learning from Experience activities, feeding back into future programmes and product design teams.
Who we’re looking for:

- Engineering or Numerical degree (or equivalent with experience). Mechanical, Electrical or Instrument apprenticeship with SVQ Level 3.
- HNC or equivalent qualification is an advantage.
- Knowledge of components/ systems functionality and numerical methods.
- Experience of working on complex tasks that are novel and ambiguous.
- Familiarity of the in service operation environment, including regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Experience in troubleshooting and/or problem resolution.
- Experience in support/lead cross-functional teams e.g. specialists, suppliers, customers, partners.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place.
